Customizations

Customizations let you offer choices and add-ons for your menu items. When a customer adds an item to their cart, they can select from the customization options you have defined — choosing a size, picking toppings, adding extras, and more.

How Customizations Work

A customization is made up of two parts:

  1. Customization Group — The question or choice you are presenting (e.g., "Choose your size", "Pick your toppings").
  2. Options — The individual selections within that group, each with its own name and price (e.g., Small - $5.00, Medium - $7.00, Large - $9.00).

When a customer orders an item that has customizations linked to it, they see the customization groups and can pick from the available options.

Creating a Customization Group

  1. Go to Menu Setup in the sidebar.
  2. Select the Customizations tab.
  3. Click Add Customization.
  4. Enter a group name (e.g., "Size", "Toppings", "Sauce").
  5. Add options to the group. For each option, provide:
    • Option name (e.g., "Large", "Extra Cheese", "BBQ Sauce")
    • Price — The price for this option. Set to $0.00 if the option is included at no extra charge.
  6. Click Save.
Common customization examples
  • Size: Small ($5), Medium ($7), Large ($9)
  • Toppings: Extra Cheese ($1.50), Bacon ($2.00), Avocado ($2.50)
  • Extras: Add a drink ($3), Add fries ($2.50)
  • Sauce choices: Tomato (free), BBQ (free), Aioli ($0.50)

Think about the choices your customers ask for most often and build those into your customizations.

Linking Customizations to Items

After creating a customization group, you need to link it to the items it applies to:

  1. Go to the Items tab in Menu Setup.
  2. Edit the item you want to add customizations to.
  3. In the customization section, select the customization groups that apply to this item.
  4. Save the item.

You can link the same customization group to multiple items. For example, a "Size" customization can apply to every drink on your menu.

note

An item can have multiple customization groups linked to it. A burger might have both a "Size" group and a "Toppings" group, giving customers the ability to customize their order in multiple ways.

What Customers See

When a customer taps on an item in the Front of Store (FOS) ordering screen, they see all the customization groups linked to that item. They make their selections, see any price adjustments reflected in the total, and then add the customized item to their cart.

This means your customization names and option names should be clear and easy to understand. Customers will read them quickly, so keep the language straightforward.

Truck-Specific Overrides

If you operate multiple trucks or locations, you may want certain customization options to be available at some locations but not others. Rather than creating separate customization groups for each truck, CliqMenu handles this through Order Manager (OMS) overrides.

Order Managers at each truck can adjust customization availability directly from the OMS without changing your master menu in BMS. For example, if one truck runs out of avocado, the Order Manager can disable the "Avocado" topping option for that location while it remains available everywhere else.

info

Truck-specific overrides made in OMS do not affect your master menu in BMS. Your original customization setup stays intact, and overrides can be reversed at any time.

Best Practices

  • Name groups clearly. "Choose your size" is better than just "Options."
  • Order options logically. List sizes from small to large, or list popular options first.
  • Set sensible prices. If an option does not cost extra, set the price to $0.00 so customers know it is included.
  • Review regularly. Remove options you no longer offer and add new ones as your menu evolves.
